Glass & Seals – How to Clean, Replace, and Reseal Your Stove Glass

Your stove glass does more than just provide a window to the flames—it plays a vital role in keeping your stove airtight and efficient. Properly maintained glass ensures clear visibility, controlled airflow, and safe operation. This guide will show you how to check, clean, and replace your stove glass and its accompanying seal (gasket).

1. Inspect the Glass for Cracks or Stress Lines

Before cleaning or servicing:

• Visually inspect the glass (when cold) for hairline cracks or stress fractures.
• These cracks may worsen over time and could fail completely when the stove is next lit. If any damage is present, replace the glass immediately.

2. Diagnose Soot or Staining Issues

If your stove glass is constantly blackened or stained:

• Check the moisture content of your firewood. Wet logs produce tar and smoke. Use a moisture meter to confirm your logs are under 20% moisture content.
• Review your burning technique. When burning dry wood, close the primary air (bottom vent) and keep the secondary air (top vent) open for cleaner combustion.

Improper airflow - especially when slumber burning - leads to poor airwash performance, soot buildup, and creosote formation.

3. Clean the Glass

For routine maintenance:

• Avoid abrasive pads or chemicals that can scratch or weaken the glass

4. Check the Glass Gasket/Seal

The rope seal or gasket around the edge of your stove glass allows for thermal expansion and helps maintain an airtight fit.

Signs of gasket failure:

• Frayed, brittle, or flattened rope
• Loose or rattling stove glass
• Difficulty achieving a consistent flame or proper burn

If the seal is over 2 years old or visibly deteriorating, it should be replaced even if the glass is intact.

5. Replacing Glass or Seal

When replacing either part:

• Do not overtighten the clips or screws that hold the glass in place—just enough to hold it snugly
• Use heat-resistant rope of the correct diameter and high-temp adhesive when fitting a new seal
• Allow adhesive to cure before lighting the stove
