The bottom fire brick set for the Hi-Flame Alpha 2 lines the base of the firebox, insulating the floor from direct contact with burning fuel and protecting the steel underneath. A cracked or broken base brick should be replaced before it erodes completely and exposes the base plate. This vermiculite set is made specifically for the Alpha 2 firebox dimensions.
