The baffle plate on the Hi-Flame Graphite 5 deflects combustion gases back down through the firebox before they exit through the flue, which extracts more heat from the fuel and reduces particulate emissions. It sits directly above the fire and takes sustained high temperatures. When it cracks or burns through, heat efficiency drops noticeably and the stove may smoke more than usual.

Also known as a throat plate, the baffle controls how combustion gases travel through the firebox. A cracked baffle allows hot gases to bypass the secondary burn zone and exit straight up the flue, wasting fuel and increasing creosote buildup. Replacement is straightforward: remove the fire fence, tilt and lift the baffle out.
