The grate rod on the Mulberry Joyce is the steel riddling rod that links the external control knob to the riddling grate mechanism inside the firebox. Moving the rod rocks the grate to break up clinker and drop ash through into the ash pan below. Rods can bend, corrode, or lose their connection to the grate mechanism over time, making ash clearing difficult.

The rod passes through the stove body and connects the riddling grate to the external operating knob. Keeping the riddling mechanism functional is important for regular ash maintenance, which in turn keeps airflow through the grate open and combustion efficient.
